Gujarat records 1,560 new COVID-19 cases, highest one-day spike
- Gujarat recorded 1,560 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the highest spike in a 24-hour period so far, the state health department said on Thursday evening. It took the case count in the state to 2,03,509.
- With 16 patients succumbing to the infection during the day, the death toll due to the pandemic reached 3,922, it said.
- As many as 1,302 patients recovered since Wednesday evening. Of the 16 patients who died during the day, 12 died in Ahmedabad city alone, followed by three in Surat and one in Vadodara.

- West Bengal’s COVID-19 toll rose to 8,224 on Thursday after 52 more people succumbed to the disease, a state health department official said.

UK records highest daily Covid-19 death toll since May 5
- The coronavirus-related deaths in Britain rose by 696 to 56,533, marking the highest daily death number since May 5.
- Another 18,213 people in Britain have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 1,557,007.

US Covid-19 deaths top 2,60,000: Johns Hopkins University
- US registered over 2,400 deaths from Covid-19 in 24 hours, the highest daily toll in six months as the Thanksgiving holiday began.
- With the national caseload topping 12.6 million, the death toll across the US rose to 2,60,322.
- New York state reported 34,362 fatalities. Texas recorded the second most deaths, standing at 21,245. The states of California, Florida and New Jersey all confirmed more than 16,000 deaths.
- States with more than 9,000 fatalities also include Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Michigan.

AstraZeneca manufacturing error clouds vaccine study results
- AstraZeneca and Oxford have acknowledged a manufacturing error that is raising questions about preliminary results of their experimental COVID-19 vaccine.
- A statement describing the error came days after the company and the university described the shots as “highly effective” and made no mention of why some study participants didn’t receive as much vaccine in the first of two shots as expected.
- In a surprise, the group of volunteers that got a lower dose seemed to be much better protected than the volunteers who got two full doses.
- In the low-dose group, AstraZeneca said, the vaccine appeared to be 90% effective. In the group that got two full doses, the vaccine appeared to be 62% effective. Combined, the drugmakers said the vaccine appeared to be 70% effective.

Global Covid-19 cases surpass 60 million: Johns Hopkins University
- The global case count reached 60,037,735, with a total of 1,413,325 deaths worldwide as of 12:27 p.m. local time (1727 GMT), the CSSE data showed.
- The US reported the most cases and deaths around the world, which stood at 12,642,245 and 260,591, respectively.
- India recorded 9,222,216 cases, ranking second in the world. Brazil followed India with 6,118,708 cases and 170,115 deaths, the world’s second largest death toll, the Xinhua news agency reported.
- Countries with more than 1.5 million cases also include France, Russia, Spain and Britain, while other countries with over 50,000 deaths include India, Mexico, Britain, Italy and France, according to the CSSE tally.

China reports 21 new COVID-19 cases vs 5 a day earlier
- The National Health Commission said in a statement 12 of the new cases were imported infections originating from overseas.
- The number of new asymptomatic cases, which China does not classify as confirmed cases, fell to five from six cases a day earlier.
- The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in mainland China now stands at 86,490, while the death toll remained unchanged at 4,634.

- The average cost of this year’s Thanksgiving dinner declined by 4 per cent from last year, according a recent survey released by the American Farm Bureau Federation.
- The average cost of this year’s Thanksgiving feast for 10 remains affordable at $46.90, or less than $5 per person, the survey showed.
- This is a $2.01 decrease from last year’s average.

Sudan’s former PM Sadiq al-Mahdi dies from coronavirus in UAE
- Sudan’s former PM Sadiq al-Mahdi died from a coronavirus infection three weeks after being hospitalised in the UAE.
- Mahdi, 84, was Sudan’s last democratically elected prime minister and was overthrown in 1989 in the military coup that bought former president Omar al-Bashir to power.
- Mahdi headed the moderate Islamic Umma party and remained an influential figure even after Bashir was toppled in April 2019.
- Last month, al-Mahdi’s family said he had tested positive for COVID-19, and was transferred to the UAE for treatment a few days later following a brief hospitalisation in Sudan.
